Painting a piano might sound daunting, but I promise it doesn’t have to be. Chalk painting this piano was so simple and quick. Follow along as I show you how to chalk paint a piano in 4 easy steps.

Unfortunately the paint color I used was leftover of a custom mixed color, so I can’t share what the color is because I really don’t know… But it’s kind of a warm beige color. Follow along to see my 4 tips on how to chalk paint a piano!

How To Paint A Piano With Chalk Paint - Chalk Paint Piano

So I’ve been wanting a painted piano for years. At one point, my in-laws had mentioned that we could have theirs and gave me permission to paint it, so you better believe we took them up on it! I was sooo excited to have a piano (finally).

How To Chalk Paint A Piano In 4 Easy Steps

I grew up with a piano, and I feel like growing up, everyone else had one too. Just me? That’s a home staple I don’t want to see fade. I want to re-learn how to play and I want my kids to take lessons and know how to play piano as well.

Typically I’d choose white, but I wanted to mix it up a little bit and do something warmer. It might end up white eventually, because let’s be honest… I paint everything white. But for now I’m really enjoying the beige-y color that I used.

Above I’ve listed all of the supplies that you need to get started on this project. You honestly might have some of the needed supplies already.

Chalk Paint Piano

This project is very beginner and not hard at all. The nice thing, too, is that once you have these supplies, you’re set up to do similar projects in the future. I love collecting tools for certain projects, because it usually makes my next project easier.

First, you’ll want to wipe everything down. After that, you’ll want to use the painter’s tape to tape off any parts that you don’t want paint on.

While chalk paint doesn’t necessarily require any prep, you do want to make sure the surface is smooth and clean so the paint sticks well. You’d be surprised at how many times I’ve painted a piece of furniture only to realize that there were pieces of clear Scotch tape now under the paint… Yay.

Painted Piano Tutorial

If for some reason your piece has any uneven spots or chunks missing, definitely sand the rough spots or use wood filler to fill in the missing parts. But otherwise, no prep required! Gotta love it.

That’s right, I said it. Paint! Go for it. Your piece should be prepped to paint if you followed step 2. YAY. This is the most exciting part.

A: Of course you can! It’s just not necessary with chalk paint. It’s one of the things that chalk paint boasts, minimal to no prep. Any prep you do will just help the paint to stick even better.

How To Paint A Piano With Chalk Paint

A: I prefer the wax, as it has a matte finish and goes on easily. All you need is a clean rag to apply and then buff (make sure to follow the instructions on the product).

A: Is it indestructible? No, but if you follow the instructions and protect it with a finishing coat, it should hold up pretty well! I’ve had good success with it in the past.

So with chalk paint, you’ll want to wipe it down, tape off anything you don’t want paint on, and then PAINT! I love how chalk paint is so easy to use and I especially love the minimal prep required. When I told my friends I was going to paint a piano, most of them were pretty skeptical about it. I heard just about every question you could imagine.

Piano Makeover With Rust Oleum Chalk Paint.

Is that even possible? How would you even go about doing that? Would it ruin the piano? Could the instrument itself stand up to all the prep work? What if it doesn’t work?

It took a lot of research and a bit of blind faith, but once the project was completed, I was thrilled with the result.

It took me a while to gather all the info needed to really attempt this project, and it didn’t seem to be readily available. SoI’m going to share everything I learned about how to paint a piano with you, so you can do it to!!

The piano in our home had lots of superficial damage when we got it. It was an upright piano that had lived in a youth hall at a church for years and years. It was being replaced with an electronic keyboard, and was no longer needed.

It’s not a great before picture of the piano, but I completed this project long before I started this blog, so I didn’t really think about getting good before and after shots.

But the piano still played beautifully and the instrument itself had been properly maintained and tuned regularly. It was offered to us for free, and I thought it was worth saving.

You can frequently find pianos in this type of condition very cheap or even for free on Craigslist or local buy/sell/trade pages on Facebook.

Trying to paint a piano seemed like a pretty insurmountable task when I first started researching it. Using a standard method to paint or refinish a piece of furniture requires a LOT of prep work.

Samantha Raising Wildflowers Motherhood Blog

The sanding alone seemed like it would make this task impossible, since I couldn’t figure out a way to do it without getting sawdust all inside the piano.

But then I had a conversation with my favorite designer who happens to be my best friend, Beth from Atlanta Shabby Chic. She had been refinishing furniture for a year or two at that point and had turned some really run down items into absolutely gorgeous showpieces by repainting them.

Chalk paint is an easy to use paint that adheres beautifully to hard surfaces and requires little to no prep work before use. It’s not the same as chalkboard paint. It’s called chalk paint for the chalky finish the paint has when it’s dry.

How To Paint A Piano (a Tip No One Else Is Talking About)

This dull, chalky finish might not sound desirable. But with a wax coat on top of the paint, you can create a gorgeous, lustrous look that works with any decor.

Once I heard Beth rave about how easy it was to use, and how beautiful the results turned out, I was completely sold.

So to start this project, I went out and gathered up all the necessary materials I would need. The list included the following:

Chalk paint is sold at lots of retailers now a days, but back in 2014 it wasn’t as readily available. Now you can even order it off Amazon!

I’m partial to Renaissance Furniture Paint by Retique It. It comes in a variety of colors, and they even have an AWESOME starter kit that included everything you need to paint a piece of furniture. You can order that starter kit or just the paint and wax here:

I used a dark gray paint with a clear wax for our piano. I wanted a traditional look without it being completely black. If I’d wanted it darker, I could have used a dark wax, but I really loved the deep gray color we ended up with.

Diy Piano Makeover

The biggest appeal of chalk paint is the minimal amount of prep work needed to get your project started. That’s what makes it perfect to paint a piano with.

I started by spreading out a large drop cloth to protect my floor. Our piano is on wheels, so my husband and I were able to easily just roll it into place on top of the drop cloth before I really got started.

With chalk paint there is no need to sand or or prime what you are painting. But our piano had more damage than we were comfortable with just painting.

Projects That Will Inspire You To Paint A Piano

So I filled in the gouges and holes with wood putty and let it thoroughly dry. Then I sanded just the areas I had filled with the wood putty until they were smooth and even with the surrounding area.

I used warm water with just a small bit of dish soap. I dipped a cloth into this water and wiped down all the surfaces of the piano that I was planning to paint. Then I wiped the piano dry with another cloth.

Then I enlisted the help of my husband to disassemble what we could of the piano. We took off the panels covering the keys and the strings. We also took off the bottom panel above the foot pedals.

We then covered the vulnerable parts of the piano with a old sheet that I cut specifically to fit the area. I used painters tape to affix it to the wood of the piano to protect the keys and the parts we didn’t want painted.

Once we were done with the prep work, it was time to get going on the real fun of painting the piano.

With chalk paint, it’s important to make sure the paint

Every monitor or mobile display has a different capability to display colours, and every individual may see these colours differently. In addition, lighting conditions at the time the photo was taken can also affect an image's colour.

BAUWERK Colour Lime Wash Paints are purely mineral based. They are manufactured from calcium carbonate, the same material sea shells are made from. When you paint with it the only chemical reaction that takes place is the absorption of atmospheric CO2 to convert the lime paint back to lime stone.

Limewash Paint 101: How To Master This Intimidating Wallcovering

We colour our Limewash with natural pigments, this makes our colours completely different, as when light hits the wall the colours look like no other.

You can safely paint your home without any fear of breathing in fumes that are harmful to you or your children. We make the paint without solvents or volatile organic compounds (VOC). Because of that, Bauwerk Lime Paint is fire proof.

The paint is not film-forming, like a plastic paint, it allows walls to breathe and be part of your micro-climate inside your home.

You can paint a lot of different surfaces with Bauwerk Colour Lime Paints, some can be painted with very minimal preparation, some require a few more steps before you can apply our paint.

BAUWERK Limewash paints are perfect for all masonry surfaces, like render, bricks, mud brick, strawbale that’s where it works best as it is absorbed into the wall leaving a breathable surface that is protected by the natural properties of the paint. However it’s also ok if your walls are already painted or are made of gyprock / drywall / plasterboard or plaster.

It is very important that your walls are correctly primed, as Limewash and Prep Coat will not mask what is on your wall, for example, inconsistent materials like the join lines of where the plasterboards meets, or any fillers or patches that are on the wall – to ensure that no ghosting of these inconsistencies comes through to your final finish.

Modern Lime Wash Wallpaper. Linen Color. Peel And Stick

Step 1. First apply 2 coats of a good quality water based drywall / plasterboard / gyprock primer, to ensure an even absorbency across the wall surface.

Step 2. Apply 1 coat of our BAUWERK Prep Coat by roller, especially formulated to make limewashing easier and more durable on previously painted walls.

We have especially developed our Prep Coat as a bridge coat between standard paint and primers to make limewash more durable, and easy to apply.

It is important to understand that BAUWERK Limewash and Prep Coat have no capacity to mask what is on your wall, it allows all the history and the materials of the wall to come through.

Natural walls such as unpainted render, brick, stone, masonry, mud brick, etc. Do not require any undercoat or primer, limewash can be applied directly to the wall.

Onyx - Black Limewash Paint

Dampen walls sufficiently with water, prior to painting the first coat to ensure the paint is spread out thinly. First coat can be applied as soon as surface is ready – no curing time needed.

Color Washed Walls Are Making A Comeback—here's How To Get The Look

Previously painted render, brick, stone, masonry, mud brick. Carry out any surface repair and remove all dust and loose particles. No undercoat required. Sand well if previous paint has any gloss level. Previously painted masonry internal walls with an inconsistent wall finish or gloss finish – you can apply 1 coat of BAUWERK Prep Coat to create a more uniform finish.

Most important is that the surface has some ability to absorb the paint as lime wash paints always look for a surface it can penetrate into.

If you are not sure if your surface has some absorbency you can do a quick and easy test with clean water: if the water is absorbed, so will be the paint. If the water is rejected we have to create an absorbent surface first.

How To Transform Any Room With Limewash Paint

Most surfaces will naturally have some differences in absorbency. Most are ok, but some you may not like to see through the finished paint work:

If you do not want to see such repairs it is necessary to equalise the absorbency across the entire surface, otherwise they might ''ghost'' through after painting. Follow our Application guidelines to fix such surfaces.

VENEZIANO - Black Limewash Paint

Surfaces such as newly rendered walls, natural stone, mud bricks, rammed earth, even canvas, can be painted directly. You can add clean water to the surface before the first application in cases of high absorbency. Never thin the paint for that purpose!

How To Paint A Wall With Limewash

Generally, if you paint on top of BAUWERK Prep Coat, 1 liter of limewash paint will cover 6m2. Usually two coats are sufficient.

The Top 5 Paint Trends Of Fall 2021

If you paint over new render, 1 liter of Lime wash paint will cover between 7-10m2 per coat, depending on the surface texture and level of absorbency.

If you are painting natural surfaces such as render or brick our paints are wonderfully durable as they are absorbed into the wall. If you are painting our paints on already painted or sealed walls, they are not as scrubbable as other paints. Because our paints are made from natural materials, they are not made to be indestructible, it is part of the beautiful natural qualities of the paint. However they are perfectly durable enough and have been used in thousands of homes all over the world. We work with nature to make paints that are good for the environment including your home environment, many standard paints have a toxic mix of chemicals such as biocides, plastics and heavy metals to make them function as paints that stick to your wall, and make it possible to scrub them. With natural antibacterial qualities, our paints are suitable for a high humidity environment. We have especially developed our BAUWERK Prep Coat as a bridge coat between standard paint and primers to make limewash more durable, and easy to apply.

The Complete Guide To Lime Paint - Black Limewash Paint

Sealer or protective coats do contain a lot of chemicals that we try to avoid, often change the appearance and do get damaged regardless. i.e once a wall is sealed it becomes harder to repair.

Must Know Diy Limewash Tips For Painting Your Walls

Limewash has its own perfectly ‘’Imperfect’’ look, and in painting it out will add to the character and patinated look. Usually only one coat is applied at a time and that takes only a few minutes. The paint dries quickly and is fume and smell free.

The ideal lime wash substrate is a lime or (in high traffic areas) a cement based render . We found those to be the most resilient and long lasting finishes. The same goes for concrete or brick walls. For those substrates the paint is applied directly, without the need for primers or Prep-Coat. Such wall finishes are also a zero VOC finish.

If you covered up all surfaces that you did not want to come into contact with the paint, then you wont have much clean up to do.

Clean up with water, you can add a little bit of soap, or if you had a larger spillage you can also use some diluted vinegar (test your surface first). Most non-absorbent surfaces you can wipe the paint off with a lint free white piece of cloth.

Your brushes and stirring tools wash out with water. The run-off is safe for your drainage system or your garden, it will not pollute the environment nor damge or clog up your septic system.

Described last year as the 'only artist who can unite England' during the Brexit crisis, George Shaw's paintings of derelict suburban houses and sombre interiors now appear to embody the UK's moment of self-isolation amid the coronavirus outbreak.

Despite the fact that Shaw's paintings are devoid of human life, his paintings capture 'Britishness', proving that our architectural settings and material world shape us as much as we shape them.

Born and raised in Coventry, Shaw grew up painting the post-war council estates near his home in the 1970s. He went on to study art at Sheffield Polytechnic followed by the Royal College of Art in the 1990s, where he continued to find inspiration from the suburbia where he was raised.

Reflecting on some of his earlier work such as the painting below, the artist commented: 'this was made when I was a student at the Royal College, it's a painting of the house that I grew up in.'

'I wanted to make that journey back home, at a time in a place when things were quite clear, quite sure. Me, working away in the upstairs room, is a memory I am quite fond of... it's quite romantic and sentimental now.'

Since the compound bow was invented/patented in 1966, the term "vintage compound bow" loosely describes any compound bow that is not a "modern compound bow". However the line between Vintage and Modern is a bit vague and always moving, as time keeps hurtling forwards the definition of what is considered Vintage and what is considered Modern also keeps changing. For the time being however let us consider any bow built between 1970 and 1995 and any bow that uses older cam designs to be Vintage (this means it could be a more recently built bow that uses an older cam design), and any bow built during the last "while" with irregular designed cams that use pins to be Modern.

Project Gridless: How To Adjust The Draw Length On A Vintage Compound Bow - How To Adjust Draw Length On Compound Bow

Below is an example of a Modern irregular cam design. It uses holes with locking bolts to adjust draw length. By irregular what we mean is that the cam is not round, but often is more oval, egg shaped, or sometimes might even look like the Millennium Falcon (like the one below).

How To Measure Your Draw Length

Below is another example of a Modern cam which uses locking bolts. To adjust the draw length you lower the poundage of the bow first, then remove the bolt, move it over to desired hole (which is when a manual becomes handy), screw the bolt back in - and then raise the poundage back up to the desired amount. (Changing the bolt's location typically also effects the poundage, so it is best to set the draw length FIRST, then adjust the poundage.)

In this third example you will see bolt holes for both adjusting the draw length and also the draw weight. Definitely one where you would want the owners manual.

In the event that lost your owner's manual and cannot find a copy of it online, here is a rough guide to adjusting it:

Ways To Measure Draw Length For A Bow

There is not a lot of variety when it comes to vintage compound bow cam design. Most of them will look almost exactly the same, and within their simplicity lies a simple logic: Less equals More.

That last one is basically a reference to the concept that the more complicated you make something, the more easily you can break it. eg. Imagine if you lost the locking bolt for a modern cam. The entire bow could be rendered useless because you are missing that one little part. Furthermore, modern cams are typically made of lightweight alloys - which are more susceptible to damage due to falls, becoming bent, breaking, etc.

A so-called Vintage cam design however is more round and looks like the one shown on the right here, which unfortunately is not adjustable. This sadly is the case with some older compound bows, they have zero draw length adjustability.

Step By Step Bow Tuning For Beginners

To adjust from one to the next you simply move the cable from one "canal" to the next "canal". If your adjustment leaves more cable on the cam, you have shortened the draw length. If your adjustment places less cable on the cam, you now have more draw length.

Then just replace the cable on the cams in the correct position, reattach the bowstring to the cable Teardrops, readjust the draw weight/poundage back to its original desired point, and finally either unlock the cams or remove from the bow press (whichever method you used). Then test to make sure the draw length and draw weight is at the desired point. If you made a mistake you may need to go back and repeat the whole process.

This process is actually fairly simple. So easy that if necessary you could adjust the bow in the field with almost no tools (eg. possibly just some Allen keys).

Understanding How To Size Your Compound Hunting Bow

If you have questions about adjusting an unusual style of cam (whether vintage or modern), send me an email via cardiotrekgmail.com and I will be happy to write another blog post on the topic of adjusting your unusual style of cam. Please include photos of the cam so I can see how it is designed.I’m still growing, so I’m constantly adjusting my draw length. Lucky thing, it’s easy to do on a PSE bow. A bow press does make the job easier, but on the Phenom, it isn’t needed.

So, how do you adjust the draw length on a PSE compound bow? PSE bows are simple to adjust. Most models won’t even need a bow press. The main steps include:

In this post, I’ll cover how to adjust your draw length. The Bow I use is a PSE Phenom, your PSE settings might differ slightly, but the procedure is just the same.

Project Gridless: How To Adjust Draw Weight On A Compound Bow

You already know having the correct draw length is a big part of being a consistent and accurate archer. Leaning back or hunching into the shot or a bent bow arm are sure signs that your draw length is all wrong. So it’s time for an adjustment.

 - How To Adjust Draw Length On Compound Bow

It should be noted that changing your draw length will change your stance, and so you may find the new position a little strange and uncomfortable at first, but you’ll soon adjust to it.

The first step is to remove all accessories. The last thing we want to do is damage the Bow or any of the attachments. Go ahead and remove the front and side stabilizers. I take both stabilizers off going to competitions, so my fasteners are easy to handle, but if you don’t take yours off very often, they might be a little tight.

Archery Draw Weight: Understanding Its Importance In Archery

Some compounders may only have a front stabilizer. I have a front and sidebar. It might be helpful to have a friend hold the Bow while you screw off stabilizers.

The sight bar is not difficult to remove but be sure to note the setting. Fitting the T bar on the wrong hole will leave your sight marks way off.

With the attachments removed, lay a blanket or some cardboard down on a flat surface, don’t want to scratch the riser or damage the limbs.

Compound Bow For Teens And Kids, adjustable Twin Cam 15 29lbs 19\\

You won’t need many tools for this job, some Torx and some Allen keys and possibly a Philips (Star) screwdriver. The Torx on my Bow is measured in imperial, also known as standard, but my sight is measured in Metric, so I always need both size tools.

I also need to be mindful. Using the wrong size tool on a screw can cause major headaches, I know from experience!

 - How To Adjust Draw Length On Compound Bow

The last time I adjusted, I found after a few ends, my Bow started to develop a rattle. On examination, I found one of the screws came loose. I tightened, and again it came loose.

Bear Authority Review

I raided my father’s toolbox and used a small amount of medium strength mechanics thread lock, so you might want to recheck your screws after shooting.

I have a draw length now of 27 inches, but I have to check it regularly. My coach usually checks it at the beginning of every month.

The PSE use lettering to identify the different predetermined draw length settings. The letter “A” is the longest setting, and each letter reduces by a 1/2 inch draw length.

How To Adjust The Draw Length On A Bear Compound Bow

First off all, screw-identifying letters will need to match, don’t worry, this will make sense later. All bolts need to be tight and then rechecked before testing.

What I love about the PSE – it’s a gift to adjust, but I should say it depends on what adjustment you’re making. Some settings may require a bow press because the screws land right behind the limb. Don’t worry. This becomes clear shortly.

Not all PSE bows will have two cams. Some may only have one and an idler wheel. In that case, you have less work.

This guide shows the Posi-lock type, and it should be noted that the main difference between them – the Discrete type inner cam screws will need to be removed completely in order to adjust, the Posi-lock type generally only need loosening.

I generally say because some positions on the Posi-lock inner cam presets require the two screws to be repositioned in pre-drilled holes. It’s not difficult to do.

Begin by positioning the Bow so that the inner cam screws are facing you. Best to have the Bow on a secure surface. Adjusting both cams is a simple 8 step process, and we’ll begin adjusting the top cam first.

Project Gridless: How To Adjust The Draw Length On A Vintage Compound Bow

You’ll notice that one of the Torx screws is partially hidden by the bow limb. In this case, I was able to turn the cam by hand enough to release the screw.

However, if you’re unable to or if adjusting the cam lands the adjusting screw under the limb, you’ll need a bow press to finish the job.

Step 2: Slide the cam to the desired preset letter position. The inner cam (red in pic) will slide to the next position pin window and seat. The cam may need encouragement or further lousing on both screws.

How To Adjust A Compound Bow: 12 Steps (with Pictures)

Step 3: Remove the Draw stop by removing the screw. Reposition it in the preset letter that corresponds to the letter of the positioning pin. For example, the
